At the Minnesota Financial Empowerment Initiative (MNFEI), we recognize that financial health is deeply personal and cultural. As our board member Miguel Angel Quiñones notes, "Traditional financial education often follows a one-size-fits-all approach based on middle-class norms, which doesn’t suit the needs of immigrant and refugee families."
This is why MNFEI is committed to cultural responsiveness. For adults from under-resourced communities, financial concepts must be relevant to their unique experiences, cultural values, and systemic barriers. We strive for Inclusion and Respect, two of our core values.
We are incredibly proud to have Miguel Angel Quiñones on our board. As a PhD candidate and an individual originally from Mexico, Miguel's background has been a key to success in tailoring our content, particularly for our partnership with Learning in Style. His work ensures our curriculum moves beyond mere financial literacy to build genuine financial capability and confidence.

Our approach is participatory, moving away from a prescriptive, top-down model. We emphasize cultural strengths, such as mutual aid and collective family financial socialization, ensuring that learners are empowered to shape the topics based on their own needs and interests. We acknowledge the emotional and even traumatic side of money management linked to migration and financial struggles, shifting the focus from individual blame to navigating deep-rooted inequities.
By leading with knowledge, empathy, and respect, MNFEI becomes a compassionate ally, supporting participants as they build the foundation for better financial security. We thank Miguel for his dedication to ensuring our content truly reflects the voices and experiences of all the communities we serve.
Miguel is playing an important role in making sure our content reflects the voices and experiences of all the communities we serve. MNFEI is proud to have him on our team.
